Why early matters more than big
A TikTok trend is not one thing. It is a sound, a format or a topic that a few creators try, that works, and that thousands then copy. Reach goes to the early copies. By the time a trend is visible on your For You page, the accounts that will get the views have already posted, and the platform is starting to show it less.
For a brand the maths is simple. The same idea, posted in the first days of a trend, can get ten times the views of the same idea posted a week later. Being early is worth more than being clever.
Where trends start
Rarely with brands, and rarely on your own feed. The feed shows you what is already big. Trends start in a few places you have to look at deliberately:
- Sounds. A clip of a song or a line of dialogue that creators start to reuse. The sound page shows how many videos use it and how fast that number grows.
- Formats. A structure that travels across topics: a text-message skit, a "10/10 habits" list, a reaction to an escalating situation. Formats last longer than sounds.
- Reddit and the news. Many TikTok topics are a thread or a headline first. If it is being argued about on Reddit today, it is a format on TikTok next week.
- Other markets. A trend that peaked in the United States or the Netherlands often arrives in the United Kingdom or Germany later, sometimes by weeks.
Four signals that a trend is rising, not peaking
- The curve. Count the videos using the sound or format per day. A rising trend doubles in days. A peaking trend is flat or falling, however large the total.
- Who is on it. Early, it is small and mid-size creators. When the biggest accounts and the first brands appear, you are at the peak.
- Spread. A trend that has moved from one niche into two or three others has legs. One that stays inside a single community usually dies there.
- Variation. If creators are already twisting the format, it is alive. If every video is a straight copy, the format is tired.
Which trends are worth your time
Most are not. A trend is worth posting when it fits your tone, your audience and your market, and when none of your direct competitors has taken it yet. That is three checks: fit, market, whitespace. Teams that skip the fit check end up with a post that gets views and loses the brand. Teams that skip the whitespace check post the same joke as a competitor, a day later.
How to run this every week without a research team
By hand, this is a day a week for one person, and it does not scale across markets. The reason trend intelligence tools exist is to watch the sounds, formats and topics continuously, show the curve rather than the total, and score each trend against a brand so the fit and whitespace checks are already done.
That is what Trends does in Social Thirst: trends per market from TikTok, Instagram, Reddit and the news, a forecast on each, and a brand match score from 1 to 100 with the reasons. The early ones are at the top. From there the script is one click.
Questions
How early is early enough?
The useful window is the first few days of a format or sound, while the climb is steep and the big accounts have not posted yet. A week in, most of the reach has been taken.
Do trends differ per country?
Yes, and more than most teams expect. A sound can peak in the Netherlands two weeks before it reaches the UK, or never cross at all. Watch your own market.
What if a trend does not fit the brand?
Skip it. A trend that forces the brand to act out of character costs more in trust than it earns in views. The score is for finding the ones that fit.
